The story of colour development in a dye studio (shed)

I’ve spent quite a lot of time this week working on colour development and thought you might be interested to read about it - Claire and Debbie were, anyway, as they saw the work in progress and were wondering what on earth I was doing. They also had the unbridled joy of watching me flicking really slowly through my wildflower book to find the plants I was looking for and check their names. I do talk to myself whilst I'm doing this (yes, and I'm only 33) so I think they've learned to just ignore my ramblings.  This week I was...

What does semi-solid mean? Your guide to hand dyed yarns..

Ever wondered what terms like semi-solid, variegated, or OOAK mean? Hopefully this blog post will help explain and guide you through the myriad of hand dyed yarns that are available now. Firstly let me tell you a bit about production of hand dyed yarn, which will give you some context. It arrives from the mill in un-dyed skeins, meaning that the wool is not bleached or anything, it’s simply in its natural colour (in this case cream). June's update preview

Seeing as our next update is on the 15th of June (7pm) and it's now the 12th I thought I'd best post the update preview! It's all Tempo 4ply, which is our superwash wool/nylon sock yarn. It knits up softly with good drape for shawls, but it's also incredibly hardwearing for socks and kids' clothes. I made my Boxy in it, and you can see a whole gallery of Tempo 4ply projects on the blog HERE. There are quite a few Cottage Originals in this update, and dyelots are five or ten skeins.  In no particular order... I will list...

Update Preview: Jan 2017

Morning/afternoon/evening... I hope you're all well! We've had a busy start to the year, as usual, although it's been a bit more chaotic with a 15 week old Labrador puppy about - I'm sure you'll have seen my pics on social media! It's getting easier as she gets older though and the days getting longer is helpful too. Anyway, so far is year I've mostly been busy working on wholesale yarn, but I did prepare lots of BFL Sock ready for Sunday (the 29th)'s update - it'll go live at 2pm UK time. We actually have a sparkling new website...

DK Surprise

We've not had much DK for a while so I thought it might be time to rectify that! Our schedule is slowly getting back on track as we make our way through the huge back log of work, hence the smaller-than-usual updates. Hopefully next year will be less disrupted. These yarns will go live on the website HERE at 7pm UK time tomorrow (Wednesday the 7th of December). There are six ten-skein batches of Oakworth DK.. from top to bottom we have Coppice, Dale, Wild Raspberry, Faded Bloom, Black Magic Rose, and Tide. Dale is a new colourway inspired by...
