Neutral colours at Eden Cottage Yarns: why we love them and which ones to look out for!

Can we talk about neutral colours for a moment? Firstly, what constitutes a neutral? For me it’s a colour that isn’t leaning towards any particular colour group, if that makes sense. I suppose another criteria would be that it goes with everything, or most other colours. It starts with white, black, and grey, of course, but then for me it extends to beiges, oatmeals, browns, and creams. I was talking about it with Claire though and was surprised when she brought out dark blues as neutrals - to me they’re just blue, which is not a neutral, but as she...

What does semi-solid mean? Your guide to hand dyed yarns..

Ever wondered what terms like semi-solid, variegated, or OOAK mean? Hopefully this blog post will help explain and guide you through the myriad of hand dyed yarns that are available now. Firstly let me tell you a bit about production of hand dyed yarn, which will give you some context. It arrives from the mill in un-dyed skeins, meaning that the wool is not bleached or anything, it’s simply in its natural colour (in this case cream). This morning I was out in the pouring rain photographing the sparkly yarn I've dyed for Saturday's 7am update... obviously the yarn was kept under the garden brolly but myself & camera ended up stood just outside the edge of it. I had woollies (handknits, obvs) and a waterproof on, and ended up creating a rainhat for my camera out of parcel tape and a sandwich bag. As you do. Anyway, this all means that all of the yarn photos are now up in the Facebook event page for this update, so you can see that HERE. If you mark...

Preview of Friday's hand dyed yarn update: Bowland 4ply

Here's the second yarn in Friday's update (Friday the 30th of June at 8pm).. this is a yarn that should be very familiar to most of you as BFL Sock. However... it has always bugged me that I never came up with a better name for this yarn. It's daft really because I've had Bowland DK for years, and it never occurred to me that the 4ply version of the same yarn might be Bowland 4ply. Anyway... it is now!  I've updated it in Ravelry and you can see all the projects made in it over the years HERE. Moving...

Preview of Friday's hand dyed yarn update: Harewood 4ply

Friday's update has a bit of a BFL theme to it, with two different superwash British Bluefaced Leicester yarns. It goes live at 8pm on Friday the 30th so set your alarms! So the first yarn is Harewood 4ply - this is a high twist yarn as you can see from the texture; it's slightly woolly but has good stitch definition and drape. It's one of the yarns used in Justyna Lorkowska (aka Lete's Knits)'s Holyrood shawl - this was our second Edinburgh Yarn Festival shawl collaboration. If you look on the Ravelry pattern page HERE the top photo shows...
